Dallas SR22 Auto Insurance Policy
Reader’s Question:
I was required to get SR22 insurance here in Dallas but my auto insurance carrier does not offer it. Is it possible for me to retain my current policy and get SR22 from an insurer that offers it?
Garrison
Dallas, TX
SR22 insurance is liability coverage on your auto insurance that is required so that a driver with suspended license can reinstate his/her driving privileges. SR22 auto insurance is distinctively suitable for these circumstances since it asks the auto insurance carrier to inform the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in the event that the policy is canceled, terminated or lapses. In such cases, the driver’s license would normally be suspended until the SR22 auto insurance policy is made current or reinstated. In majority of the states, you need to carry SR22 auto insurance for a certain time (normally three years) after the suspension or revocation period of your driver’s license.
You can’t purchase separate policies for SR22 insurance if you currently have auto insurance in place. What you have to do is cancel your policy if your auto insurance carrier in Dallas does not offer SR22 and get a policy from an insurer that does.
Remember that having an SR22 insurance means you are considered as a high risk driver, thus having higher auto insurance rates. You can still be able to find an auto insurance policy that has reasonable rates if you shop around and compare auto insurance quotes from different insurers.
Dallas Auto Insurance
Reader’s Question:
What are the necessary coverages for a Dallas auto insurance ?
Tom
Dallas, TX
The state of Dallas requires liability coverage just like other states in the country. The minimum coverage for a liability in Dallas auto insurance is $20,000 for bodily injury to one person, $50,000 for all bodily injuries, and $25,000 for property damage. While getting a liability insurance is the only requirement under the law, it’s not enough. The liability coverage only protects you from paying for damages when you hit another person while driving or injure a person through a collision. This coverage will pay for the other person’s hospitalization and pay for damages to her car.
However, the liability coverage does not cover your injuries or damages to your car. Without another form of coverage, you are faced with the costs of your hospitalization and repairs to your car. In other words, liability insurance may be the only necessary coverage for a Dallas auto insurance but it’s not enough. You will also need a comprehensive coverage under your Dallas auto insurance to be able to feel safer and more at ease when driving. The comprehensive coverage will also protect you from other forms of damages that are not related to collision. This non-accident related damages could come in the form of theft, vandalism or hitting an animal on the road.
Non Owners Car Insurance Dallas Texas TX
Reader’s Question:
I have a question about non owners policy. If the driver has a non-owners insurance policy and was at fault in an accident, which insurance coverage is considered primary for third party damage or liability?
Dallas, TX
According to the Texas Insurance Commissioner’s information sheet on the pros and cons of this non-owners insurance states that named non-owner policy is always in excess of the liability coverage purchased by the owner of the vehicle being driven. Therefore if you got involved in an accident, the car owner’s liability insurance pays first, up to the limits of the car owner’s policy. The non-owner policy comes into picture only if the cost of property damage and/or injuries goes over the limits of the car owner’s liability policy.
This may vary in other States but generally in Dallas the owner of the car’s insurance is primary and the driver’s insurance, non-owners or other type of insurance policy, is secondary or excess regarding third party liability or damage.
