Reader’s Question:

I was required to get SR22 insurance here in Dallas but my auto insurance carrier does not offer it. Is it possible for me to retain my current policy and get SR22 from an insurer that offers it?

SR22 insurance is liability coverage on your auto insurance that is required so that a driver with suspended license can reinstate his/her driving privileges. SR22 auto insurance is distinctively suitable for these circumstances since it asks the auto insurance carrier to inform the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in the event that the policy is canceled, terminated or lapses. In such cases, the driver’s license would normally be suspended until the SR22 auto insurance policy is made current or reinstated. In majority of the states, you need to carry SR22 auto insurance for a certain time (normally three years) after the suspension or revocation period of your driver’s license.

You can’t purchase separate policies for SR22 insurance if you currently have auto insurance in place. What you have to do is cancel your policy if your auto insurance carrier in Dallas does not offer SR22 and get a policy from an insurer that does.

Remember that having an SR22 insurance means you are considered as a high risk driver, thus having higher auto insurance rates. You can still be able to find an auto insurance policy that has reasonable rates if you shop around and compare auto insurance quotes from different insurers.

Reader’s Question:

Hi! I have been living here in Texas for quite some time. I have been convicted of DUI, and my agent told me that I should file the SR22 form or else I will lose my driving privileges. This is the first time that I have been convicted of such a violation, and I do not know where to start. Can you help me resolve my issues? How can I get car insurance SR22 DUI in Dallas?

I am afraid your agent was right. Failure to comply with the filing of requirements for SR22 would result in a suspension of your driver’s license and driving privileges. Before that happens, you should take the necessary action to avoid that. You can get your SR22 form from a licensed insurer or your carrier, in your case.

You can file the SR22 form in the State Capital of Texas. You can file it yourself or let your attorney handle it for you. Your insurance company in turn would provide the SR22 form for you or you can let them move the filing.

Usually, you have three years to file it from the date of suspension. During a period of three years, you must maintain and carry your SR22 whenever you are driving as proof of clearance or responsibility. If it expires before the given period or cancelled for that matter, your insurance carrier must notify the ordering state as required by law.

If for instance your SR22 expires just before the given period of three years for some reason, you must renew it to maintain your driving privileges. Failure to do so would mean revoking your license until renewal of SR22 has been filed. It is important that you update your status to your State Licensing Authority and maintain your SR22 to avoid any hassles or problems in the future.

If your license is already suspended before you have a chance to file for SR22, you might want to address the problem first by paying the appropriate fees and fines, and then proceed with your filing.

Finding car insurance SR22 DUI in Dallas is not that hard. You just have to know the requirements and your state laws.
