Reader’s Question:

I was required to get SR22 insurance here in Dallas but my auto insurance carrier does not offer it. Is it possible for me to retain my current policy and get SR22 from an insurer that offers it?

Garrison

Dallas, TX

SR22 insurance is liability coverage on your auto insurance that is required so that a driver with suspended license can reinstate his/her driving privileges. SR22 auto insurance is distinctively suitable for these circumstances since it asks the auto insurance carrier to inform the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in the event that the policy is canceled, terminated or lapses. In such cases, the driver’s license would normally be suspended until the SR22 auto insurance policy is made current or reinstated. In majority of the states, you need to carry SR22 auto insurance for a certain time (normally three years) after the suspension or revocation period of your driver’s license.

You can’t purchase separate policies for SR22 insurance if you currently have auto insurance in place. What you have to do is cancel your policy if your auto insurance carrier in Dallas does not offer SR22 and get a policy from an insurer that does.

Remember that having an SR22 insurance means you are considered as a high risk driver, thus having higher auto insurance rates. You can still be able to find an auto insurance policy that has reasonable rates if you shop around and compare auto insurance quotes from different insurers.

Reader’s Question:

I would like to get suggestions on how I can negotiate for a cheap car insurance here in Dallas. Thank you for the help.

Marc

Dallas, TX

You have several things to work on if you want to get a cheap Dallas car insurance. First, you should be able to prove to your car insurance company that you are a low risk driver. Low risk drivers, if you not have heard, are entitled to tremendous discounts from car insurance companies. This is because these drivers are obviously less likely to be involved in road accidents and car collisions.

So you should have a good driving history to be rated as a low risk driver. How can you get one? Make sure that you have minimal number of traffic violations. This way, car insurers will rate you as a low risk driver. If you can present a good driving history, there’s a good chance that you will be given cheap Dallas car insurance.

Another thing that you have to focus on is the safety of your vehicle. You must have a car that has a small engine and equipped with security devices like good brake system and anti theft system. This way, car insurers will give your vehicle a low risk rating, since there are decreased chances that it will be stolen or be involved in traffic accidents. If you put security devices on your vehicle, you can be a pretty good candidate for cheap Dallas car insurance.

Reader’s Question:

What are the necessary coverages for a Dallas auto insurance ?

Tom

Dallas, TX

The state of Dallas requires liability coverage just like other states in the country. The minimum coverage for a liability in Dallas auto insurance is $20,000 for bodily injury to one person, $50,000 for all bodily injuries, and $25,000 for property damage. While getting a liability insurance is the only requirement under the law, it’s not enough. The liability coverage only protects you from paying for damages when you hit another person while driving or injure a person through a collision. This coverage will pay for the other person’s hospitalization and pay for damages to her car.

However, the liability coverage does not cover your injuries or damages to your car. Without another form of coverage, you are faced with the costs of your hospitalization and repairs to your car. In other words, liability insurance may be the only necessary coverage for a Dallas auto insurance but it’s not enough. You will also need a comprehensive coverage under your Dallas auto insurance to be able to feel safer and more at ease when driving. The comprehensive coverage will also protect you from other forms of damages that are not related to collision. This non-accident related damages could come in the form of theft, vandalism or hitting an animal on the road.

SR22 Insurance in Dallas

Reader’s Question:

Hi! I have been living here in Texas for quite some time. I have been convicted of DUI, and my agent told me that I should file the SR22 form or else I will lose my driving privileges. This is the first time that I have been convicted of such a violation, and I do not know where to start. Can you help me resolve my issues? How can I get car insurance SR22 DUI in Dallas?

Schneider

Dallas, TX

I am afraid your agent was right. Failure to comply with the filing of requirements for SR22 would result in a suspension of your driver’s license and driving privileges. Before that happens, you should take the necessary action to avoid that. You can get your SR22 form from a licensed insurer or your carrier, in your case.

You can file the SR22 form in the State Capital of Texas. You can file it yourself or let your attorney handle it for you. Your insurance company in turn would provide the SR22 form for you or you can let them move the filing.

Usually, you have three years to file it from the date of suspension. During a period of three years, you must maintain and carry your SR22 whenever you are driving as proof of clearance or responsibility. If it expires before the given period or cancelled for that matter, your insurance carrier must notify the ordering state as required by law.

If for instance your SR22 expires just before the given period of three years for some reason, you must renew it to maintain your driving privileges. Failure to do so would mean revoking your license until renewal of SR22 has been filed. It is important that you update your status to your State Licensing Authority and maintain your SR22 to avoid any hassles or problems in the future.

If your license is already suspended before you have a chance to file for SR22, you might want to address the problem first by paying the appropriate fees and fines, and then proceed with your filing.

Finding car insurance SR22 DUI in Dallas is not that hard. You just have to know the requirements and your state laws.

Reader’s Question:

If I purchase car insurance here in Texas, who can I include in the policy?

Jamie
Dallas, TX

Buying car insurance is one way of giving your family the security they need especially if you’re traveling. And having car insurance is a responsible way of protecting everyone in your family. With car insurance, you not only protect yourself but all the members of your family who are also drivers.

Remember that if you purchase car insurance, all those who can drive in your family will be included in the policy. After all, the insurance policy is directly connected to your car, so anyone who drives it with your permission will be covered. There are companies in Texas that offer car insurance policies that lets you list a number of drivers to be included in your policy.

You can put on that list everyone in your family who drives. Whether it’s your wife, your boyfriend or your roommate, they can be included in your policy provided that you inform your car insurance company about these inclusions. Just be sure you list even those who drive your car occasionally. To illustrate, if your roommate or boyfriend drives your car and they get into an accident, the car insurance company will pay for the damages provided that the driver of your car was listed on your policy.

Failing to do so might cause delay or even denial of your car insurance claims should that occasional driver get into an accident (while driving your car) without being listed as one of the drivers in your policy.

Discounts are also offered to those who have multiple cars or multiple drivers listed on their policy. But just to be sure, try getting free car insurance quotes online or call your local agent there in Texas.

Reader’s Question:

Hi I’m Andre from Dallas, Texas. My mom has been pushing me to get collision insurance for my car. Personally, I’d rather not spend for more than I have to on something I may not use. Is he right to ask me to buy more insurance? Do I need this?

Andre

Dallas, TX

Hi Andre, I’m pretty sure your mom down in Dallas, Texas means well. I think to help you to decide, you will first need to understand what this type of automobile insurance is. We get insurance to protect ourselves, our family and the people around us. We also get insurance to protect our possessions that are of value to us. Now collision insurance, specifically covers our vehicle in cases of accidents that occur wherein the owner is found to be at fault. Meaning, if you bumped your own car either against another car or anything else, read: tree, fence, post, etc. In the event that this happens, your insurance will pay according to the fair market value of your car.

There will also be a deductible which is the share that will come from your personal stash to pay for the repairs. In case of a total wreck though, what the automobile insurance companies give may not always cover for the cost of replacing your car. You’re right, you don’t need to buy Collision Insurance as it is not a requirement by law. Although, if you bought your car through a dealership or used a loan to buy the car, these third parties may require you to get one. If this is still not the case, you may want to get this insurance if you have a relatively pricey vehicle that you may not be able to repair or replace on your own should something happen.

Reader’s Question:

I was told recently that having a lien on my car will raise my insurance premiums in Dallas Texas. Is this true?

Billy

Dallas, TX

If a vehicle is purchased or paid for in full or if it is financed could be a rating factor that is applied to insurance provider’s rating system.

The rating factors that insurance companies normally consider include your the kind of car you operate, your age, your claims history, your driving history and in some states your credit record.

Many insurance carriers in Dallas Texas thus ask if you have a lien holder on the vehicle or have paid for it in full due to how they have filed their car insurance rates and/or to be sure that if the vehicle is financed you carry Physical Damage since it is most likely required by your lien holder. Typically it is not a rating factor that will raise your car insurance rates but just information an insurance company needs to properly quote you insurance rates on the type of coverage you will need on the car.

Comprehensive and collision are the type of physical damage coverage that is usually required if your car is leased or financed. Lien holders require these coverages normally on a car to protect their interest or collateral, the car.

Non Owners Car Insurance Dallas Texas TX

Reader’s Question:

I have a question about non owners policy. If the driver has a non-owners insurance policy and was at fault in an accident, which insurance coverage is considered primary for third party damage or liability?

Dallas, TX

According to the Texas Insurance Commissioner’s information sheet on the pros and cons of this non-owners insurance states that named non-owner policy is always in excess of the liability coverage purchased by the owner of the vehicle being driven. Therefore if you got involved in an accident, the car owner’s liability insurance pays first, up to the limits of the car owner’s policy. The non-owner policy comes into picture only if the cost of property damage and/or injuries goes over the limits of the car owner’s liability policy.

This may vary in other States but generally in Dallas the owner of the car’s insurance is primary and the driver’s insurance, non-owners or other type of insurance policy, is secondary or excess regarding third party liability or damage.
